HYDERABAD: A major initiative towards integrated development of a coastal corridor extending from Srikakulam to Nellore district is proposed to be taken up by the State Government. The coastal corridor aims at giving a special thrust to industrialisation, infrastructure and utilities as well as paying attention to education and health. It will be taken up in two phases the first from Srikakulam to East Godavari and the second from West Godavari to Nellore. A total of 73 coastal mandals will be covered in the four districts in the first phase. A highlight of the proposal will be the construction of a four-lane coastal road keeping in view the impact of tropical cyclones, tidal waves and the recent tsunami. The blueprint for the coastal corridor, which was prepared by R. V. Rama Rao of the Institute of Development and Planning Studies, Visakhapatnam, in association with the Officer on Special Duty of the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC), was presented on Friday to the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who advised officials to make a thorough study of techno-economic feasibility of a four-lane corridor between Visakhapatnam and Kakinada. Earlier, Prof. Rama Rao suggested that the coastal corridor plan could be implemented under private participation and through Centre-State coordination in investment sectors of mutual interest. He proposed paying attention to fishermen settlements, a chain of minor ports, a new coastal sea route for transportation of goods, new fish landing grounds and associate infrastructure without encroaching on high productive agricultural lands. The Ministers B. Satyanarayana and K. Ramakrishna besides senior officials were present at the meeting.
