SHIMOGA: The Shimoga District Akshara Dasoha Midday Meal Cooks Federation has demanded that cooks and other assistants hired for cooking midday meal in government schools should be continued on a permanent basis. Avaregere Chandru, federation Organising Secretary, told presspersons here on Friday that cooks should be covered under a comprehensive insurance scheme and be paid compensation when they are involved in any accident while cooking. He demanded a suitable increase in the honorarium paid to them at the rate of 10 days' wages every month. He said nearly 90,000 cooks and their assistants are involved in cooking midday meals, but they have no statutory benefits. Mr. Chandru asked the Government to ensure that its circular on the working conditions of cooks is not violated by officials. He demanded that they be paid their honorarium every month and said that the position has improved after the responsibility of disbursement of honorarium to cooks and others concerned was entrusted to the headmasters of schools.
