New Deputy Commissioners

BANGALORE: Tushar Girinath, Deputy Commissioner of Shimoga district, has been transferred and posted as Deputy Commissioner of Raichur district. T.K. Anil Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Bidar district, has been transferred and posted as Deputy Commissioner of Shimoga.

H.V. Parshwanath, Deputy Commissioner of Raichur, has been transferred. A new posting has not been announced. — Special Correspondent

Khandre wants

probe withdrawn

Bidar: Prakash Khandre, MLA and President of the Bidar district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, began a fast in Bhalki on Friday, demanding withdrawal of a Corps of Detectives inquiry into the allotment of houses under the Ashraya scheme last year. Mr. Khandre, who was the president of the Ashraya house allotment committee last year, said vested interests forced the Government to order the inquiry. The inquiry will delay house allotment. He threatened to launch an agitation if the inquiry is not withdrawn in a week. — Staff Correspondent

Rs. 22.57 crores

for drought relief

BANGALORE: The State Government has released Rs. 22.57 crores for drought relief works in 21 districts. Speaking to presspersons, the Minister for Revenue, M.P. Prakash, said of the amount, Rs. 18.47 crores has been released to ease drinking water shortage. The districts which have received Rs. 1.5 crore and above are Belgaum (Rs. 1.87 crore); Bellary (Rs. 1.5 crore); Bijapur (Rs. 1.83 crore); Dharwad (Rs. 1.83 crore), Gulbarga (Rs. 2.65 crores); and Haveri (Rs. 1.85 crore). — Special Correspondent

Woman accused of cheating bank

TUMKUR: Police have arrested a woman from Bangalore on the charge of defrauding a cooperative bank here of Rs. 34.85 lakhs. The police are searching for her two "accomplices." The police said the three had allegedly withdrawn the amount from the bank on four occasions in the financial year 1999-2000 by using fake demand drafts. He gave the names of the three accused as Shantalakshmamma of Bangalore, who has been remanded in judicial custody by a court here; Aswathanaryana Shetty, a former employee of the bank; and Basheer Ahmed, a businessman. — Staff Correspondent

`Schools need better infrastructure'

Belgaum: The Minister for Cooperation, R.V. Deshpande, has called for improving infrastructure in educational institutions, including those run by Government. He was speaking at a function organised to mark the inauguration of the Anjaneya Temple constructed by Aadya Shri Nijalingeshwar Shikshan Sansthe at Sankeshwar on Friday. The Minister for Science and Technology, Baswaraj S. Horatti, called upon the managements and faculty of government and private educational institution to strive for greater quality. — Staff Correspondent

Office-bearers of panel for meet named

Bidar: B.H. Patil has been appointed president of the cultural subcommittee of the 72nd national Kannada Sahitya Sammelan to be held in Bidar. Y.R. Nandihalli and Shambhuling Waldoddi have been appointed secretaries. Sangram Engale has been appointed joint secretary. Members of the subcommittee have also been appointed, according to a release. — Staff Correspondent

Merchants to hold health camp

TUMKUR: The Turuvekere Merchants' Association will organise a health check-up camp for people with heart diseases at Gurubhavan in Turuvekere town in the district on Sunday, a release said. Doctors from Wockhardt Hospital in Bangalore will conduct the camp. Only 200 people will be enrolled for the camp. Those interested persons may contact the association.

Dalit organisations stage protest

HASSAN: Members of various Dalit organisations took out a procession in Konanur on Friday to protest against the desecration of the Ambedkar statue in Nippani town in Belgaum district last Friday. The protesters, led by leader of the Dalit Sangharsh Samiti, V. Raju, submitted a memorandum to the deputy tahsildar urging action against those responsible for the incident. Shops in the town remained closed for around two hours responding to a bandh call given by Dalit organisations. — Staff Correspondent

Man beaten

to death

Raichur: Nagappa (40), son of Yenkappa, died on the spot after he was beaten up by his brothers following dispute over an ancestral property in Narakaladinni village of Lingsugur taluk on Thursday.

The police said Bharmappa and Gyanappa did not want to give a share in the ancestral property to Nagappa which resulted in a quarrel among them. Following this, Bharmappa, Gyanappa and Venkatesh, son of Bharmappa, attacked Nagappa with lathis killing him on the spot.

Raichur: The police have registered a case against P.R. Venugopal, contractor, in connection with the reported incident of snatching of a chequebook from an official at the Yermarus Irrigation Division near here.

In a complaint lodged with the Market Yard Police Station here, Amaragundappa, First Division Clerk, alleged that Mr. Venugopal, allegedly barged into the office on Wednesday, abused him and snatched away a chequebook from him. — Staff Correspondent

Two arrested on

gambling charge

Raichur: The police arrested Saleem and Siddaramiah on the charge of gambling and recovered Rs. 1,050 stake money from them at L.B.S. Nagar in the city on Thursday. They have been remanded to judicial custody.

The police said Mahaboob, another accused, is at large.

Mahavir jayanthi celebrated

GULBARGA: The 2531st Bhagwan Mahavir Jayanthi was observed with traditional fervour here on Friday. A procession of the portrait of Bhagwan Mahavir was taken out and special prayers were held at the Adinath Digambar Jain Mandir in the city.

Man found dead

Bidar: A 35-year-old man was killed in Harkud village in Basavakalyan taluk on Thursday. A group of persons reportedly attacked Ashok Malleshappa Pujari in his field. He was found bleeding profusely. He died at a hospital. A case has been registered at the Mudabi police station. — Staff Correspondent

Elected

BIJAPUR: Noted paediatrician L.H. Bidari has been elected president of the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments' Association. His was elected at the general body meeting of the association held in Hubli recently. He will hold office till April 2007.

Dr. Bidari is the president of the Rotary Heart Foundation, Bijapur, and the chairman of Ashwini Institute of Child Health and Research Centre.
