Officials asked to keep Vizag tribals' interests in mind

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Friday held preliminary discussions with officials on the proposal to explore the feasibility of setting up an aluminium plant in Visakhapatnam district. He held a meeting with officials of the National Aluminium Company (NALCO), the Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation (APMDC) and the Tribal Welfare and other departments.

Dr. Reddy directed the Tribal Welfare and the Technical Education departments to impart training in mining technology to tribal youth so that they could be involved in the proposed project.

NALCO evinced interest in setting up the plant, utilising bauxite ore in the district, a press release issued by the Chief Minister's Office said. As APMDC had the right of mining the ore, Dr. Reddy advised officials of both the companies to examine the feasibility of jointly taking up the project.
