Vellaiyan hurt in road accident

VILLUPURAM: T. Vellaiyan, president, Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peravai, and two others were injured when their van ran into a stationary lorry at Ooranthangal near here at midnight on Thursday night.

Mr. Vellaiyan, who was returning from Tiruvannamalai to Chennai, sustained injuries in the head and arms, it is said.

The injured were taken to the Ginjee Government Hospital and later referred to a Chennai hospital. — Special Correspondent

`Goodwill' for Government

CHENNAI: A group of law students, which conducted a Statewide survey on political issues, claims that the Tamil Nadu Government enjoyed a "tremendous goodwill" among the people who considered the Veeranam drinking water scheme and the end to the Veerappan menace its "major achievements."

Other issues, which enhanced its image, are tsunami relief operations, absence of caste clashes, a conducive law and order scenario and women-oriented welfare measures, said the report released here on Friday.

A vast majority among the minority communities welcomed the arrest of the Kanchi Sankaracharyas.

More than 60 per cent of the participants expressed satisfaction with the functioning of the Government after Lok Sabha elections.

Held for obscene act

CUDDALORE: The police arrested three persons on Thursday on charges of clandestinely taking obscene photographs of a college girl and demanding a ransom from her mother for surrendering the film negative.

The police said K. Yuvaraj (27) of Sunnambukara Street at Old Town (OT), said to be a family friend of the student, frequented her house. He secretly took photographs while she was in the bathroom.

Later, with the help of S. Karthik (27), an employee of a photo studio at OT, and K. Rajesh Kumar (27), manager of a colour lab on Lawrence Road, Yuvaraj got the negatives printed and demanded Rs. 50,000 from the girl's mother. On her alert, the police laid a trap and caught the three. — Special Correspondent

2 vehicle lifters die in accident

CUDDALORE: Two of the four persons who stole a van from Chidambaram were killed in an accident at Sathyapuram on the Madurai-Tiruchi road on Friday. While Senthil and Ramesh died on the spot, Ganapathi and Gurusamy of Thottiampatti were injured.

The police said the four hired the van at Chidambaram and took it to Pondicherry. They tied up and dumped the driver at Rangiam in Perambalur district on Thursday.

On information from the driver, the Cuddalore police alerted their counterparts and the vehicle was traced within 24 hours. — Special Correspondent

Two die as train knocks down moped

NAGERCOIL: Two persons were killed when the Bangalore-Kanyakumari Island Express hit their moped at an unmanned railway level crossing at Puliyadi near Nagercoil on Thursday night.

The police said Vincent (23) and his friend Sahaya Mahesh (25) of Ozuhinaserry were trailing a tempo van, when the train knocked them down. The marriage of Vincent's sister was scheduled for Friday. The van was transporting plants for decoration at the marriage hall. — Staff Reporter

Special buses for TNPCEE

ERODE : The Kongu Engineering College, Perundurai is operating 19 free buses in different routes for the benefit of students who are appearing for the Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examination, to be conducted in the Kongu Engineering College on April 23 and 24. Two buses will start from Erode Municipal Central Bus stand at 7.40 a.m. and 8 a.m. on the two days. Similarly, two buses will start from Erode Railway Station at 8 a.m. and 8.10 a.m. to the Kongu Engineering College.

Free buses will also be operated from Kaspa Pettai, Tiruchengodu, Bhavani, Sankari, Gobichettipalayam, Kangeyam, Tirupur, Muthur, Sivagiri, Modakurichi and Perundurai bus stands at 7.30 a.m. - Staff Reporter

DHARMAPURI : The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Dharmapuri division, will operate special buses for the benefit of students who appear for TNPCEE. The examination centres are Jayam College of Engineering and Technology, Government Polytechnic College, Dharmapuri Government Arts College, PMP College of Arts and Science, Sapthagiri College of Engineering, Bargur Government Engineering College, Krishnagiri Government Polytechnic College, Government Boys Arts College, Road Transport Corporation College, Government Girls Arts and Science College and Krishnagiri Government Girls College. -Staff Reporter

Encroachments to be removed

DHARMAPURI : Rampant encroachments that have come up on the canals of the Vaaniyar dam would be removed within a week, said the Collector, Sudeep Jain at the grievances day meeting for farmers on Thursday. A total of 64 petitions were received at the meeting.

The list for farm loans would be prepared only after receiving allotment from the State Apex Co-operative Bank, he said. - Staff Reporter
