2 women killed in fire

ADILABAD: Two women -- Razia Begum (50) and her daughter, Ghousia (20) --were killed and one person was severely burnt in a fire accident at the weaker sections colony at the temple town of Basar in Mudhole mandal on Friday evening. The fire broke out while the women were cooking meal. - Staff Reporter

CBI checks Cherlapally jail records

HYDERABAD: A three-member team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) reportedly perused records in Cherlapally jail as part of the ongoing investigation into the killing of the Telugu Desam MLA, Paritala Ravi. The team questioned some jail officials. The jail Superintendent, M. Chandrashekhar, declined to divulge details. - Staff Reporter

Farmer ends life

CUDDAPAH: A debt-ridden farmer, Lakshminarayana Reddy (46), ended his life by consuming poisonous granules in Basireddipalle village in Pulivendula mandal in the early hours of Friday.

All four borewells sunk spending Rs. 1 lakh to save his citrus plantation failed leaving him heart-broken, according to the police. - Staff Reporter

Ryot, girl commit suicide

Kakinada: A small farmer, Penumuri Nageswerarao (53), owing to family problems on Friday allegedly committed suicide by consuming acid mixed with brandy at his home in Chinthaluru village. He was rushed to the Government General Hospital where he died in the early hours. Rayudu Durga (14) allegedly ended her life by consuming a pesticide at her home in Vetlapalem village under Samalkot police station limits on Thursday. According to the police, her father admonished her for her poor performance in the eighth class examination prompting her to take the extreme step. - Correspondent

Two women labourers run over by lorry

UDDAPAH: Two aged women labourers were fatally run over by a lorry at Nandalur bus stand on Friday night. Nagamma (55) of Vangimalla village in Veeraballe mandal and Veeranagamma (60), who were crossing the road died instantly when the lorry carrying detergent powder from Gujarat to Chennai hit them, according to the police. Genco blamed for power plant shutdown

CUDDAPAH: Shutting down of Rayalaseema Thermal Power Plant's second unit would cause a monthly loss of generation of 5.40 lakh units, the CPI district secretary, G. Obulesu, said on Friday.

Addressing a press conference at Yerraguntla, Mr. Obulesu attributed the shutdown to Genco's lopsided decisions and Government's negligence in mitigating water shortage.

The Government assured adequate water supply from Chitravathi project but took no action, he alleged. - Staff Reporter

Pylon unveiled

KURNOOL: The representative of Janashakti, Chandranna, unveiled the pylon in memory of Neelam Ramachandraiah at Bollavaram in Kurnool district on Friday. Addressing the meeting, Mr. Chandranna said the Government indulged in violence to withdraw from peace negotiations.

He said the Government had no commitment to take the negotiations to logical end. - Staff Reporter

RJD leaders for Modi's dismissal

CUDDAPAH: The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leaders on Friday sought the dismissal of the Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, for allegedly engineering an attack on the Union Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad Yadav. The RJD district president, M.A. Kareem, the general secretary, P. Mahaboob Khan, and the minority cell president, S.M. Bukhari, condemned the attack by the BJP, RSS and Bajrang Dal activists at Vadodara. - Staff Reporter

KURNOOL: The Postal Department released a special cover as part of Earth Day here on Friday.
