`Indian biotech firms should look at U.K. as business destination'

BANGALORE: Two U.K.-based biotech companies on Friday signed agreements with Indian firms to transfer technology in the field of bio-pharmaceuticals.

Zenosis Limited of the U.K. and Edu Tech of India Private Limited, a information and learning services provider, signed a deal that will help Indian bio-pharmaceutical companies to market their products internationally.

Simon Burgess, Chief Executive Officer of Zenosis, and A. S. F. Karim, Managing Director of Edu Tech, signed the pact at the "Discover U.K. Bio" session at the Bangalore Bio 2005 conference.

Shantha Biotechnics, a biotech company, signed an agreement with PolyTherics Ltd., the British High Commissioner, Sir Michael Arthur, told presspersons here.

The technology transfer agreement between Shanta Biotechnics and PolyTherics is to licence "Polytherics novel Pegylation Technology" to make an affordable PEG-Interferon product for the treatment of Hepatitis C. The two companies will collaborate in an accelerated drug development programme to commercialise a cost affordable treatment for patients with Hepatitis C.

The High Commissioner invited Indian companies to expand their businesses beyond their country. India's leading biotech firms with global ambition should look at the U.K. as a business destination, he said.

Randox coming

The High Commissioner said Randox Laboratories Limited is setting up its first manufacturing unit outside the U.K., in Bangalore. Randox developed the world's first diagnostic system based on biochips and is now considered the leading company in the world in that sphere. Randox has also built and developed the world's first Protein Biochip manufacturing facility.

The U.K. delegation to Bangalore Bio 2005 has representatives from some bio clusters — Cambridge, Wales, the Midlands and London.
