JALLAS (J&K): Soldiers of the Poonch Brigade of the Army, posted along the Line of Control and till now battling infiltrators, will now be entrusted with the construction of a six-km stretch of the Poonch-Rawalakot road. The decision to open up the historic road was taken by the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, during their recent meeting in New Delhi. Traffic on the all-weather Poonch-Rawalakot road came to a halt in 1947-48 and the forward belt beyond Jallas and Salotri villages became out of bounds for civilians due to its proximity to the LoC. Earlier, this road was the main route for residents travelling to Rawalpindi, three hours away from here. At present the road is motorable only till Jallas, seven km from Poonch town.
