Higher growth in infrastructure sector

Special Correspondent

Telecom and road sectors were exceptions

NEW DELHI: Most of the key sectors in infrastructure recorded higher growth in the first 11 months of the last fiscal as compared to the like period in 2003-04. The only exceptions to this higher growth trend were the telecom sector where the number of new landline connections were lower and the road sector in terms of lesser number of roads rehabilitated and bridges constructed during the period.

Topping the performance list during April-February 2005 was the civil aviation sector with double-digit growth clocked in all its fields. The highest increase of 25.8 per cent was achieved in the handling of import cargo, followed by handling of passengers at domestic terminals (23.9 per cent growth), a 14.3 per cent hike in passenger handling at international terminals and a 12.6 per cent increase in export cargo handling. Despite the lower landline telephone connections, the next best performance came from the telecom sector with a 21.1 per cent rise in addition of switching capacity and a 13.9 per cent growth in cellular phone connections. The road sector also fared well with a 20.3 per cent increase in the upgradation of highways even as a negative trend was witnessed in the rehabilitation of roads and construction of bridges. Another key sector that recorded double-digit growth was ports with a 10.9 per cent increase over the corresponding period of the previous year by way of handling 344.64 million tonnes of cargo.

The other major sectors in infrastructure, namely power and coal, also clocked a growth rate of nearly 6 per cent, while it was slightly above 3 per cent in the case of steel.
