BANGKOK: Thailand and Croatia were even after splitting the singles matches on Saturday the first day of the Fed Cup World Group II tie at the Thai resort of Phuket. Thai tennis star Tamarine Tanasugarn put the home side in the lead, defeating Sanda Mamic 7-5, 6-1, but Jelena Kostanic pulled Croatia level overcoming a tough challenge from Suchanun Viratprasert to win 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. A special court was built for the event on Phuket's Patong Beach, as part of Thailand's effort to show the world that its leading tourist destination has cleaned up since the December tsunami.
Italy takes lead
Italy took a 1-0 lead over champion Russia in their Fed Cup tie after Francesca Schiavone beat Dinara Safina in the opening match. Schiavone won 7-5, 6-3 against the sister of Australian Open champion Marat Safin on the red clay in Puglia.
