Rs.3.89-crore relief for crops damaged in floods

Special Correspondent

Farmers must collect assistance before April 25

CUDDALORE: The Collector, Gagandeep Singh Bedi, has stated that Rs. 3.89 crores has been sanctioned towards relief for crops damaged in floods in Cuddalore district.

The amount is being disbursed through Primary Agricultural Cooperative Banks. Mr Bedi, addressing the farmers' grievance day session held here on Friday, said if the affected farmers failed to claim the amount by April 25, it would be remitted back to the Government.

A sum of Rs 10.55 lakhs was from the Natural Calamity Fund for tsunami-affected crops, and this would benefit 1,250 farmers. He pointed out a total of 573 hectares of agricultural land was either fully or partly damaged.

Between April 4 and 8, the district received an unusual rainfall of 138.6 mm. This caused damage to `navarai' paddy on 1,470 ha, pulses on 6,045 ha, groundnut on 22 ha, and cotton on 90 ha. Besides this, pulses harvested from 7,160 ha too were reportedly damaged.

Mr Bedi said the officials of the agriculture and revenue departments were collecting details of the damage and on receipt of the report necessary proposals seeking relief would be sent to the government.
