School textbooks ready

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government-owned Kerala Books and Publications Society (KBPS) at Kakkanad has completed the printing of the textbooks which are being introduced in classes six and seven from the coming academic year. The Water Resources Minister, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, who is also in charge of Printing and Stationery, said here on Saturday that 105 lakh books, consisting of 55 lakh colour books for the sixth standard and 50 lakh books for the seventh standard were ready for distribution. — Special Correspondent

Bail denied

Thiruvananthapuram: The District Judge, D. Pappachan, on Saturday rejected the bail application of Sindhu, who was arrested by the Crime Branch in connection with the SSLC question paper leak in the State. Dismissing the bail plea, the judge noted that granting bail to Sindhu, the second accused in the case, at this point was likely to affect the investigation by the Crime Branch. Counsel for the second accused informed the court that the Crime Branch officials were harassing Sindhu. — Staff Reporter

Remanded

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Thiruvananthapuram, Paul Simon, remanded Suresh, who was arrested from Chennai by the Crime Branch sleuths in connection with the SSLC question paper leak in the State, till May 5. Suresh, who was brought to the city from Chennai earlier in the day, was produced by the Crime Branch at the residence of the magistrate at Pattoor at 6 p.m. Staff Reporter

Free study materials

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has cleared the proposal to provide study materials free-of-cost to students of the first standard of Government and aided schools during the coming academic year. They will consist of a slate, two slate pencils and a set of books. The books will be made available by the Text Book Officer. The Government asked the DPI to direct the officials to complete the distribution without any delay. — Special Correspondent

Grading system

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Grading system will be introduced in the technical high schools of the Technical Education Department and the IHRD and in the higher secondary schools from the coming academic year. An official press note said today that it would be introduced in classes eight and nine of the technical high schools under the Technical Education Department and eight, nine and eleven of the schools under IHRD and the higher secondary schools.— Special Correspondent

KOLLAM: The Energy Conservation Society will organise a State-level vacation cartoon camp for students in the age group of 12 to 17 years. The camp will be organised in association with the Academy of Cartoon and the Energy Management Centre. Cartoonists Toms, G. Somanathan, Kollam Papachan and Levi Ravikumar will lead the camp. Those interested in taking part should submit a cartoon on `Drinking water shortage' in black ink on A4 size paper. The address and phone number of the candidate should be mentioned. KOLLAM: In connection with the International Red Cross Day celebrations on May 8, the district unit of the Indian Red Cross Society will organise a painting competition for school students on May 6 at the Red Cross Hall at Kochupilamoodu here. Man killed in accident

KOLLAM: A 60-year-old man was run over by a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus at Kottiyam Junction on Saturday afternoon. He was identified as Raghavan Pillai. A native of Vaikom, Raghavan was on his way to Thiruvananthapuram to attend the Samastha Nair Mahasammelanam in a bus with other NSS activists. The bus stopped at Kottiyam for lunch. Raghavan was crossing the road to the restaurant when he was run over by the KSRTC bus. His body was handed over to relatives after post-mortem at the District Hospital here. — Staff Reporter

Probe on into death

of bank officer

KOTTAYAM: The investigation into the unnatural death of a bank officer belonging to Jharkhand, at Pala, is on, the police said. According to sources, more than 30 persons including workers at a nearby construction site have been questioned in this connection. The police have not ruled out the possibility of professional killers being employed in the case. The body of Rabindra Kumar was found in his house by his friends on Thursday. — Staff Reporter
