`Department of Information keen on addressing scribes' problems'

BELUR: (HASSAN DIST.): The Minister for Information, B. Shivaram, on Saturday called upon journalists to uphold ethics of the fourth estate and to religiously guard professionalism.

He was presiding over a programme organised by the Belur unit of the Karnataka Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) to felicitate the newly appointed members of the Accreditation Committee and Karnataka Madhyama Academy.

The Minister urged the members to make the best use of academy activities and achieve excellence.

The Department of Information is keen on addressing problems faced by journalists, especially in rural areas, he added.

Responding to a memorandum submitted by the members of Town Municipal Council, which honoured him on the occasion, he said that he is aware of the Rs. 3.50-crore proposal sent to the Government for the overall development of Belur in view of the Mahamastakabhisheka to be held in February.

He promised to take up the matter at the appropriate level.

To. Cha. Anantha Subbarao, member, National Council, IUJ, said that the idea of forming the Madhyama Academy was mooted at the State conference of the KUWJ held in Hassan.

The former Chief Minister R. Gundu Rao, who had inaugurated the conference, was instrumental in forming the academy.

He urged the Government to form a policy to facilitate a senior journalist to serve as a MLA. The president of the taluk unit of the KUWJ, Raveesh, urged the Government to take up the overall development of Belur.

The members of the Accreditation Committee, R.P. Venkatesha Murthy and N. Najunde Gowda, and the member of Madhyama Academy, K.R. Manjunath, were felicitated.

The Belur MLA, Kumaraswamy; the president of the district unit of the Janata Dal (Secular), K.S. Lingesh; and the president of the district unit of KUWJ, Shivananda Tagadur, were present.
