Car festival and `Ethir Sevai' turn people gathering on streets into a sea of humanity

MADURAI: Thousands of devotees welcomed Lord Kallazhagar into the Temple City at the `Ethirsevai' function, at the Moondrumavadi here on Saturday.

The Lord left his abode on Friday amidst reverberating music and special poojas followed by devotees dressed in the traditional colourful attire holding torches in their hand.

The Lord reached Appan Thirupathi at night and in the early morning reached Moondrumavadi.

Devottees thronged all along the path to have a glimpse of Lord Kallazhagar.

The Lord reached Prasanna Venkatachalapathy Temple at Tallakulam before midnight where the Lord was decked with the flower garland brought from Andal Temple at Srivilliputtur. Later, in pure white silk dress the Lord would enter Vaigai on the horse palanquin between 7.15 a.m. to 7.30 a.m.

The ceremony of Lord relieving Mandooga Mahirishi of his curse would be performed on April 25.

Car festival

Thousands of devotees witnessed the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple Car festival, here on Wednesday.

The car rolled out of the Karuppanna Swamy Temple at Theradi around 6.05 a.m., where pujas were performed for the smooth conduct of the festival, a tradition being followed for several decades.

This year, the new clothes with appliqué designs and renovation work done on the car made it more colourful. Besides, the hydraulic brakes, fixed at a cost of Rs.1.5 lakhs, provided a dependable endurance to the rolling of the car.

As the `chapram' of Lord Vinayagar and cars of Lord Sundareswarar and Piriyavidai and Goddess Meenakshi, rolled out on the four Masi Streets, those who volunteered to pull the car increased in numbers.

The car came to the origin around 10.30 a.m.

Refreshments were provided to devotees and those who pulled the car.

Labourers belonging to Indian National Trade Union Congress pulled the car. All the power lines and telephone lines were temporarily put off to facilitate movement of car and fire tenders followed the car. The TVS Company provided technical support.

The HR&CE Minister, P.C. Ramasamy; the Collector, D. Raajendiran; the Commissioner of Police, Vijay Kumar; the Board of Trustees Chairman, Karumuttu T. Kannan.
