NEW DELHI: Even as the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has complained of revised domestic bandwidth rates as being below cost, the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) has supported the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) initiative. The new ceiling rates with reduction up to 70 per cent will take effect from May 1. Welcoming the TRAI's decision, the PHDCCI president, K. N. Memani, said the decision would go a long way in giving a fillip to domestic exchange of data and voice services. The price reduction would give a renewed thrust to increased usage of Internet in the country, as till date Net usage had not been able to penetrate a large section of Indian populace due to high usage cost. IT enabled service enterprises such as BPOs and telecom service providers would also be in a position to enhance their competitive edge vis-à-vis other regional competitors as they would be in a position to reduce their operational costs to an appreciable extent. Mr. Memani said it was a step in the right direction in promoting competition in the domestic market to the advantage of the end-users.
