MANAMA: After a gap of 29 years, Syria has withdrawn almost all its forces from Lebanon. In the Syrian capital, Damascus, an official was quoted as saying, "Within the next few hours, all the troops will be out of Lebanon." The official clarified that some troops would be left behind to participate in a farewell ceremony on Tuesday. The Lebanese military base of Rayak, a few km from the Syrian border, has been earmarked for the farewell. Hundreds of tanks and military trucks, packed with equipment and soldiers, passed through the Masnaa border crossing into Syria. Eyewitnesses saw similar convoys crossing another border point in northern Lebanon.
