A volte face?

This refers to the meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Nepal King Gyanendra on the sidelines of the Asia-Africa summit in Jakarta. Within three months of the coup in Nepal and the cancellation of the SAARC summit over the legitimacy of King Gyanendra, New Delhi has done a volte face. The argument is that if India has no problem doing business with Pervez Musharraf, it should not bully Nepal to restore democracy.

The implications of the King assuming power in Nepal are considerably different from Gen. Musharraf being at the helm of affairs in Pakistan. The concerns to be raised with different countries should be evaluated and applied on a case-to-case basis. This will lessen the scope for policy contradictions and embarrassing turnarounds.

Gaurav Dua,
New Delhi
