`Nikaah' via Internet

The bride made her vows at a net café; the groom was in Saudi Arabia

LUCKNOW: Marriages may be made in heaven but they are now being solemnised online among Muslims.

Twenty-year-old Shabnam wedded a 28-year-old computer engineer, Abdul Kalam, in Saudi Arabia through an online exchange of marriage vows at a cyber cafe in Hussainabad area here in Uttar Pradesh.

"Though we would not encourage online marriages as it has the risk of cheating, if the conditions of proper identification and confirmation are being followed, it is legal," the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board member, Sajjad Nomani, said.

The family members and witnesses, however, must ensure that the girl is not being taken for a ride, he said.

The families of Shabnam and Kalam fixed the match some time back and decided to go ahead with the ceremony on the Internet. The couple have not yet met.

As the Qazis from both the sides prepared the `Nikaahnama', the relatives, voice chatted with each other using Yahoo messenger.

The couple also had a glimpse of each other through the web camera.

Sweets and beverages were served to the guests, making it appear like a usual marriage ceremony. — PTI
