Honour for doctor

NELLORE: Sai Murali, Director and chief consultant, Bollineni Eye Hospital and Research Centre, Nellore, has been selected into the elite group of top 50 cataract and refractive surgeons of the world, by the `Cataract and Refractive Surgery Today', a leading scientific journal of USA, for practicing surgeons. He is one among the three Indian surgeons to be included in the list. - Staff Reporter

Grant for research

TIRUPATI: The Chemistry Department of Sri Venkateswara University has received a grant of Rs. 63 lakhs for various research projects.

The department received a grant of Rs. 27 lakhs from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) for a five-year project for computerisation and laboratory upgradation. Similarly, an associate professor, V. Padmavathi, has been sanctioned Rs. 23 lakhs and Rs. 7 lakhs for two projects, while an associate professor, N. Venkatasubba Naidu, has been sanctioned Rs. 6 lakhs for his project.— Staff Reporter

Lok Adalat conducted

MADANAPALLE: Under the supervision of Madanapalle mandal legal literacy association, the chairman-cum-additional district judge, P. Ramesh Babu, conducted a Lok Adalat here on Saturday. Nine civil cases, two criminal cases and two motor accident cases were settled and compensation Rs. 9.13 lakhs paid.

The judge, S.V.V. Natha Reddy, the conciliators -- P.T. Sarma and S.V. Raghavan participated. -- Correspondent

Mock EAMCET results

CUDDAPAH: Activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI) on Sunday released the results of a mock EAMCET held on April 15.

The toppers in engineering were -- K. Sandeep, M. Phani Ravikant and A. Naga Swetha, all from Narayana College.

In medicine -- G. Venkataramana, M. Sahitya and S. Sabiha Anjum -- bagged the top three slots, the SFI district president, Veerasekhar, and the secretary, T. Sunil said. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde, has appointed three members of the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission to fill the existing vacancies.

According to orders issued by the Chief Secretary, Mohan Kanda, the new members are: T. Devendranath, Chintam Venkata Reddy and B. Rama Krishna Raju. - Staff Reporter

Village servants'

salary increased

HYDERABAD: The Government has issued orders increasing the salary of village servants by Rs. 300 each.

The pay rise will come into effect from next month, according to a press release issued by the Andhra Pradesh Village Servants' Association. The Government made a promise on March 5 to increase their salary. D. Rajalingam, president, and other leaders of the association, said the pay rise was a result of various agitations during the last four years. - Staff Reporter

Cotton farmer

ends life

KHAMMAM: A cotton farmer committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Penuballi village in Kothagudem mandal on Sunday.

According to reports, Chakiri Opulaiah (45) was found dead in his fields.

An empty pestcide can was found near him.

The farmer had run up debts to the tune of Rs. 2 lakhs.

To tide over the crisis he had taken three acres on lease last year to try his luck in groundnut cultivation. It only added to his travails. - Staff Reporter

Leopard found

killed

ANANTAPUR: Suspected poachers killed a leopard at Tarimela village in Singanamala mandal on Saturday night. It is the second leopard to be killed in the district in a week.

According to information, the carcass of a leopard was found in the village. The wild animal was shot dead.

As neither forest officials nor the police went to the village till afternoon, the villagers themselves moved it to the local veterinary hospital and got the post-mortem conducted. - Staff Reporter

Christians sought

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Christian Federation on Sunday appealed to the Centre to grant equal rights to dalit Christians.

A memorandum in this regard was submitted to the Union Human Resources Development Minister, Arjun Singh, here, by Anthoniraj Thumma and B. Danam, executive secretaries of the federation, after a convention on `education and welfare of minorities' organised by the Forum for Equity and Justice. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The fourth anniversary of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) will be a low-key affair at the land sanctioned to the party at Banjara Hills here on Wednesday.

Three die in

suicide pact

KURNOOL: In a suicide pact, a woman and her two children committed suicide by drowning themselves in a well at Velugodu in Kurnool district on Sunday. According to reports, Parameswaramma (25), her children -- Jacob Suryavardhan (6) and Hemavardhini (8) -- jumped into an abandoned well and died.

The police and villagers fished out bodies in the evening. Domestic problem was said to be the cause for taking the extreme step. - Staff Reporter
