Vinod Sridhar claims title

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: Vinod Sridhar overcame a late resurgence from Karan Rastogi to clinch the National ranking men's tennis singles title on Saturday night.

The 6-3, 5-7, 6-0 victory for the top seed, in a final marked by a 20-minute break due to power failure in the decider, made him richer by Rs. 60,000 for winning the Ira Diamond Jewellery-sponsored event at Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana.

"We are both baseline players and I just played my normal game. I was hitting the ball well right from the start and knew I had a chance,' said Sridhar, who had lost in straight sets to the Mumbai youngster in a selection tournament a couple of months ago. The doubles title was won by top seeds Ashutosh Singh and Ajay Ramaswamy, who defeated Vinod Sridhar and Kamala Kannan 6-3, 6-4.

The results: Singles: Vinod Sridhar (TN) bt Karan Rastogi (Mah) 6-3, 5-7, 6-0.

Doubles: Ashutosh Singh (Delhi)/Ajay Ramaswamy (Mah) bt Vinod Sridhar/Kamala Kannan (TN) 6-3, 6-4.
