Heavy showers lash Shimla

SHIMLA: Shimla and its surrounding areas were lashed by intermittent heavy showers accompanied by hail and sleet this afternoon.

The rain and hail caused sharp fall in day temperature and forced the tourists and local people to run from shelter. The busy bazars of the town wore a deserted look as rain and hail forced people to rush indoors.

People were forced to put on heavy woollens as strong velocity winds added to the chill. The rain was not considered good for the standing wheat and stone fruit crop.

Reports of rains and drizzle had also been received from parts of Dharamsala, Solan, Sirmaur and Kullu districts.

The higher reaches in tribal Lahaul and Pangi area had mild snowfall while the lower valley areas reeled under avalanche threat. In the plains Varanasi, with a maximum temperature of 44 degree Celsius, turned out to be the hottest place in Uttar Pradesh today as searing heat continued to sweep different parts of the state.

The weathermen said maximum temperature across the State during the last 24 hours hovered between 41 and 44 degree Celsius. Varanasi at 44 degrees (four degrees above normal) stood hottest, while Allahabad followed close at 43 degrees (three above normal) and state capital Lucknow at 41 degree (a degree above normal).

The MET department has forecast thunderstorm at a few places in the state, while Lucknow and neighbouring areas could be in for a transient drizzle in the next 24 hours. - PTI & UNI
