Uttar Pradesh
LUCKNOW: With an aim to infuse new blood for regaining lost ground in the politically crucial state of Uttar Pradesh, Congress plans to replace old faces in district and city units by easing out leaders continuing on their posts for decades. There is a conscious effort to bring new faces who could revamp the party in Uttar Pradesh by involving youth and those district and city unit presidents continuing on the posts for either two terms or a period of six years shall not be repeated in the ongoing organisation elections scheduled to end on April 30 next, Congress sources here said. Almost 75 percent of the district and city unit chiefs have been holding their posts in the organisation for several years at a stretch, sources said. The leaders, who have proved to be ineffective or had contested the Lok Sabha or assembly elections, will also not be repeated, though there would be an exception in case of UPCC president Salman Khursheed, sources said. The party High command is aware that things in the organisation will not change till those who have been running the party as their private property for years are not removed, sources said. Efforts are also on to give more representation to women, backwards and dalits to bring back its traditional vote bank in the party weaned away by the casteist parties over the years. MP, I D Sheelam, overseeing the ongoing organisation elections is of the view that dalit representation in the party should be upto one-third which could effectively help the party to win them back in the party fold, sources claimed. - PTI
