35,000 fake voters' names deleted from Delhi rolls

NEW DELHI: As many as 35,000 names of fake voters have been deleted from the electoral rolls of Delhi by the State Election Commission which is carrying out a revision of rolls to check bogus voting.

The action was taken after verifying a list of ``duplicate voters'' submitted by local BJP leader Ved Vyas Mahajan, who alleged that nearly 4.95 lakh migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan illegally managed to get enrolled as voters in the capital before the December 2003 Assembly polls.

In an affidavit filed in the Delhi High Court, Deputy Chief Electoral officer J K Sharma said Mahajan's list was subjected to verification and 35,000 names have been deleted and the exercise was still going on in some Assembly segments and further position would be known by May 11.

He, however, denied that illegal migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan were issued Voter Identity Cards or their names were included in the voters' list, saying electoral rolls were prepared after proper verification. The court has asked Delhi Government to file a further status report giving the latest figure on deletion of names of fake voters from the electoral rolls by May 25 and fixed July 19 for further hearing.

In his petition filed through counsel Ashok Kashyap in 2003, Mahajan sought deletion of the names of illegal voters alleging that about 4.95 lakh fake voters, mostly migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan managed to get their names entered on the electoral rolls here before the last assembly elections.- PTI
