Enthusiastic response to Chief Minister's tour

ROUSING WELCOME: Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, greeting people during his visit to Gudivada, as part of Rajiv Nagara Baata, on Sunday.

MACHILIPATNAM: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who arrived here almost four hours behind schedule, went on an interaction spree with people in different municipal wards on Sunday.

The otherwise sleepy town of Machilipatnam suddenly perked up with enthusiasm what with the visit of the Chief Minister. Dr. Reddy accompanied by the local MLA, Perni Venkataramaiah (Nani), and the local MP, Badiga Ramakrishna, went about town asking womenfolk if they were encountering any problem.

In most places, the women surged ahead towards the Rajiv Nagara baata special bus to shake hands with Dr. Reddy, even before expounding their tales of woe.

Complaints

At Circar Thota, Karagraham, Drivers' Colony, Endowments' Colony in the 18th ward, Yanadula Colony in the 30th ward, people generally complained to the Chief Minister about the lack of CC or BT road. Responding to the request of people at Circar Thota about drinking water scarcity, Dr. Reddy announced that a drinking water reservoir would be built at a cost of Rs. 71 lakhs.

To the appeal of people that unemployment problem was rampant, the Chief Minister said the State Government had launched several employment generation schemes. He wanted the people to make the best use of the schemes and derive benefit out of them.

Good response

Despite the nightfall, women, children and youth made a beeline on either side of the streets of the town through which the cavalcade of the Chief Minister passed. Lusty cheers by youth accompanying him on motorcycles and women perched up on the terraces of houses welcomed the Chief Minister. He virtually blew the bugle for the prospective municipal elections.

Earlier in Pedana, a class 3 municipality, Dr. Reddy doled out promises to people belonging to weavers' community. He said the Government was proposing to build 50,000 pucca houses for weavers and part of them would be built in Pedana. He also vowed to the people to give old age pensions to eligible weavers in the village, which is famous for "kalamkari" prints.

He laid two foundation stones for the 214A National Highway at Balliparru in Malleswaram constituency and at the entrance of Machilipatnam in Bandar constituency.

He inaugurated a "shadi khana" and laid foundation stones for drinking water supply, distribution pipeline at Gunnampalli harijanwada and Katlapalli for Rajiv gruhakalpa scheme.

He inaugurated the buildings of an Andhra Pradesh social welfare residential school for girls and MPDO office.

He also laid foundation stone for a drinking water supply scheme at Indiranagar.
