RTC city services

Sir_ For quite sometime, the RTC authorities are springing surprises on passengers by not planning properly in running city services covering Pipula Road (Ajitsingh Nagar), Autonagar, Pushpa Hotel centre and other areas.

The general public of these areas are facing problems for lack of adequate number of city buses to reach Governorpeta, Suryaraopeta and other areas. Several hospitals and dispensaries are located in these areas.

I request the RTC authorities to run services to suit the convenience of the commuters.

Telecast of cricket matches

Sir_March and April are very important months for students and parents.

While the former would be eagerly preparing for various examinations, the latter would be eagerly helping in creating a conducive atmosphere for their wards. But telecast of cricket during these months has given rise to a curious problem. It is proved to be detrimental to the interests of the students.

The telecast should be restricted at the time of examination in future.

Plight of pensioners

Sir_ The Congress, in its election manifesto, promised to increase old-age pension from Rs. 75 to Rs. 225 per month.

More than 10 months passed since the party came to power, there were no sign of any decision to hike pension amount.

Under these conditions, one can imagine the plight of pensioners. Most of them are septuagenarians, living with a meagre pension of Rs 75 per month. It is unfortunate that the Congress government has not made any effort to come to their rescue. I request the Chief Minister to issue orders immediately for hiking their pension. The increase should be with retrospective effect from October 1, 2004.

Maoists should shun violence

Sir_"Rob the rich and feed the poor' was once the prime policy of `maoists'.

It was also their stand that landlords should not buy lands of tribals in agency areas. Now, this policy seems to have totally changed even as violence has become the order of the day. It is being cited as a `retaliation' against encounter killings and also against alleged combining operations by the police.

I feel that during a recent meeting with the balladeer, Gaddar, the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, raised some valid questions. Dr. Reddy was right in asking as to what the Maoists had achieved in their 30-year-long struggle, except killing thousands of innocent people.

It is high time that Maoists come forward to resume peace talks and shun gun culture. At least for a while, they should help in establishing peace in the State.

They should realise the futility of violence and pave the way for a fresh round of peace talks at the earliest.

EAMCET panel suggestions

Sir_The high-power committee on EAMCET, appointed by the State Government, has made sweeping recommendations after interacting with people from various walks of life.

Two of the recommendations are noteworthy and certainly warrant immediate attention. They are weightage to Intermediate marks and jumbling system in conducting practical examinations.

Though Intermediate is a qualifying examination for entry into any professional course, the marks scored in this examination are not at all considered for any purpose. Due to this, they are going unnoticed.

Hence, giving 50 per cent weightage to Inter marks, as suggested by EAMCET panel, is worth considering.

At the same time, the conduct of Inter examinations should be foolproof.

There are allegations that some corporate colleges are managing examiners of practical examinations.

The Government should find a way out and accept the two recommendations of the panel so that students will benefit a lot.
