VIJAYAWADA: There has been a steady decline in the number of cases pertaining to family disputes in the city and its surroundings.

In the past seven months, cases involving family disputes in general and tiffs between wife and husband in particular came down under the Vijayawada Police Commissionerate. Women, who generally approach police stations to lodge complaint against husbands and proceed to court for divorce, are now treading the peace path and preferring a reunion.

Thanks to the Family Counselling Centre set up by the Police Commissionerate in September last, couples, which are approaching the police with a complaint, are returning home with a smile on their faces.

Timely advice

Providing timely advice and counselling to estranged wives and husbands, the city police prevented 152 couple from lodging complaints in police stations and applying for divorce in the past seven months.

The counselling centre functions under the aegis of the Women Protection Cell located on the Commissionerate premises. Individual counselling is being given to both husband and wife, who approach the police to lodge a complaint related to domestic trouble.

Based on the seriousness of the issue, the police even use the services of legal experts and psychologists to solve the problem. The experts seek the case details from complainants and offer suggestions to resolve the issue in a peaceful manner.

The centre has conducted counselling for 231 couples so far. While 152 of them have dropped the idea of lodging a complaint, 72 couples preferred to solve the issue in court. Counselling is going on in different stages to seven couples. The police are claiming a success rate of 66 per cent.
