Officials blamed for civic woes

CPI(M) yatra enters tenth day

VIJAYAWADA: The Krishna district secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), V. Umamaheswara Rao, on Sunday, said a `sustained struggle' was the only way to find solutions to the longstanding problems of people at the grass root level.

Addressing a gathering at Krishnalanka as part of the party's Prajahita yatra which entered tenth day on Sunday, he said people of the city had been facing severe problems which had not been solved for the past several years.

Flays TDP

The CPI(M) leader lashed out at the erstwhile Telugu Desam Party which, he alleged, had completely shunned welfare of the poorer sections in its nine-year rule. The TDP policies were `anti-people' targeting the lower sections of the society while extending sops to the wealthier classes, he said.

The Congress was no different. It had failed to fulfil its poll-eve promises even after one year of assuming power in the State. He said the main objective of the prajahita yatras was to bring pressure on the Government to implement the promises.

Claiming tremendous response to the yatras launched under the leadership the party's city unit secretary, Ch. Babu Rao, Mr. Umamaheswara Rao said the party had received scores of petitions highlighting problems related to ration cards, house sites, drains, drinking water, mosquito menace, sanitation and pensions.

Public meeting

He said the padayatras would culminate in a massive public meeting on April 28 after which the party would gear up for a relentless battle to bring pressure on the authorities concerned to solve the problems focused in the yatras.

He appealed to the Minister for Municipal Administration, Koneru Ranga Rao, to look into the civic problems of the city residents and do the needful. Mr. Babu Rao said the 14-day yatra would cover a distance of 300 kilometers.

He came down heavily on the civic authorities for their `failure' to solve problems of the people even while collecting huge taxes rom them. The party leaders, Donepudi Kasinadh and others participated.
