Bus bays at

railway station

Sir, — Passengers are grateful to the Railways for remodelling the City Railway Station and adding many conveniences. One more facility that needs attention is the access to the station from the bus terminus. The existing subway between the bus stand and the railway station is very difficult to navigate owing to a number of stairways and sloping passages which are slippery, especially if it rains. It is important that the Railways coordinates with the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation and provide bus bays inside the railway station compound so that passengers, especially senior citizens, women and children do not have to use the subway. Such an arrangement exists at the station in Chennai. Hope the Railways will do the needful as part of the ongoing remodelling project.

English in schools

Sir, — At last the Government has agreed to seek people's opinion through an appropriate forum to introduce English as a subject in Kannada-medium schools from first standard.

Although a person's career and future prospects are independent of the medium of instruction in school, lack of fluency in English or any other language can be a handicap, restricting a person to a certain geographical area.

Such differences will create a divide between students from rural and urban areas.

Pro-Kannada organisations are forwarding an argument that children find it difficult to learn English.

Although there is some logic in the argument considering illiteracy, poverty, health and economic condition of the family, and poor infrastructure in government schools, the study of English has to begin at some point.

The Government's proposal to introduce English from first standard is a step in the right direction.

Traffic problems

Sir, — Every day more streets in the city are being made one-way. It is frustrating for vehicle owners, and the frequent changes are putting road users to great hardship. Moreover, it is questionable if merely converting a street into a one-way will help ease traffic congestion.

These changes appear cosmetic at best and cannot solve the traffic problem.

Indiscipline on the road is another factor that affects the flow of traffic.

One wonders if the Bangalore traffic police have run out of ideas to handle the movement of traffic. Better traffic management can become a reality only by improving the public road transport system.

Regulate protests

Sir, — despite the Supreme Court's guidelines on holding protest rallies and strikes, a number of rallies and bandhs continue to be held, disrupting life in the area.

Antisocial elements wait for such opportunities to ferment trouble, incite violence and pocket unlawful gains.

Though such protest rallies and bandhs cannot be banned in a democratic country, existing laws can be amended to impose reasonable restrictions on holding them.

Governments should regulate such forms of protests to respect the fundamental rights of others and prevent loss of property and life.
