BANGALORE: The city is poised to emerge as a sought-after destination for research process outsourcing (RPO), said M.K. Shankarlinge Gowda, Secretary to the Government, Department of Information Technology. Mr. Shankarlinge Gowd told presspersons here on Sunday at the conclusion of the Bangalore Bio 2005 that one of the highlights of the event was that many international research and development (R and D) companies found Bangalore an attractive destination and many business alliances were forged in the past few days in biotechnology. "The proposed biotechnology park in the State will be based on RPO activities and will focus on generating employment opportunities in this sector," he said. Jawaid Akhtar, Director, IT and BT, said among the major alliances made was a tie-up between the Karnataka Cancer Hospital in Navanagar near Dharwad and a U.K.-based research process outsourcing company, Polyclone for R and D. Other major initiatives include Edutech, a Bangalore-based knowledge solutions company announced a tie-up with Zenosis, a U.K.-based technology company. Randox, a U.K.-based diagnostic kit maker is setting up manufacturing base outside Bangalore and Shantha Biotechnics announced a pact with PolyTherics, a University of London biotech spin-off, involves a technology transfer agreement, enabling Shantha Biotechnics to make an affordable product for the treatment of Hepatitis C. Strand Genomics entered into a pact with Medibic of Japan. He said the round table for the draft of the national biotechnology policy will forward recommendations to the Government of India soon. The event saw participation by 15 countries and nine Indian States and there were 110 exhibitors. Around 20,000 business visitors took part in the Bangalore Bio 2005 and number of international visitors had grown considerably since last year, Mr. Akhtar said. The Bangalore Bio 2006 event will be held between April 27 and 29 next year.
