LONDON: A woman, who allegedly ran a thriving racket in arranging sham marriages between unsuspecting British women and Indian men wanting to settle in Britain, has been jailed for 10 years. Jaswinder Gill (42), who duped many aspiring British models into marrying Indian "grooms'' by portraying marriage ceremonies as "wedding photo shoots'', was convicted of assisting illegal entry into Britain and trying to pervert the course of justice. Her husband, Dharsham, described as a co-conspirator, was sentenced to six years. The court was told that Ms. Gill persuaded young girls to travel to India promising them modelling assignments. Once they were in India, they were pushed into fake marriages so that their "grooms'' could claim British citizenship. Three more persons received varying jail terms for their roles.
