KANCHEEPURAM: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate for Kancheepuram constituency, P.M. Kumar, filed his nomination papers on Monday with the Revenue Divisional Officer and Election Returning Officer, K. Anbazhagan at Kancheepuram, and the party candidate for Gummidipoondi seat, P.Venkatachalapathy, filed his papers with the Special Deputy Collector (Grievance Cell) and ERO, S.P. Pitchammal at the District Collectorate, Tiruvallur. The DMK deputy general secretary, M.K. Stalin, who accompanied Mr. Kumar, told reporters that the party president, M. Karunanidhi, would campaign in Kancheepuram on May 10 and in Gummidipoondi on May 11. Others who filed their nominations on Monday were: M. Ilanchezhiyan of the Dalit Panthers of India, D. Venkatesa Mudaliar of the New Justice Party (NJP) and K. Narayanamurthy of the Rashtriya Janata Dal for Kancheepuram constituency and Viduthalai Chezhiyan of the DPI for Gummidipoondi constituency. The DPI general secretary, Thirumavalavan, who accompanied his party nominee for Kancheepuram seat, told reporters that his party decided to contest the by-elections independently to assess the DPI's popularity among Dalits and as well as other community voters. The DPI's decision to contest the by-elections independently would not affect the party's "relationship" with the Pattali Makkal Katchi, aimed to protect Tamil language. The by-election results would definitely have an impact on the 2006 general elections to the State Assembly, he added. The State deputy general secretary of the NJP, A. Shanmugham, said that they would even withdraw from the contest if the party's demand of including Mudaliar community in the MBC list was conceded by other prominent political parties.
