MADURAI: There has been a complaint that three questions in the mathematics paper of the Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examination (TNPCEE) held on Sunday were wrong. Students and teachers have appealed to Anna University to check the discrepancy and initiate appropriate action. According to a retired principal from Kovilpatti, R. Sethuraman, question 37 in modern algebra had all four answers (options) wrong. The question goes like this ... "then G with respect to multiplication is a: semi-group/monoid/group/abelian group/..." Mr. Sethuraman, a mathematics teacher, pointed out that multiplication was not even a binary operation and hence all the four choices given were completely "incorrect." Similarly,in question 5 in modern algebra, the phrasing was wrong. In the Integral Calculus section the question goes like this: "... surface area of the solid formed by the revolution of the region bounded..." Mr. Sethuraman says the region was not clearly defined and it was unbounded. "The students might have committed mistakes because of the wrong question. Moreover, all the four answer options are incorrect," he told The Hindu on Monday. The three errors should be taken into consideration before the evaluation began.
