Paddy gutted

NELLORE: More than 100 bags of paddy was gutted in a fire in P. Kottapalem village of Balayapalli mandal on Saturday night. The reason for the fire was not immediately known.

Boats sanctioned

Nellore: Twelve fibre boats have been sanctioned for shore area fishermen of Vakadu mandal, who were affected by the tsunami. Each boat is to cost Rs. 67,000. In the second phase, 62 more boats are proposed to be distributed. — Staff Reporter

UGC programme for SVU

TIRUPATI: The UGC has sanctioned a Special Assistance Programme (SAP) to the S.V. University's Department of Population Studies.

Under the programme the department would get a financial assistance of Rs.35 lakhs to carry out extensive studies and research in areas like reproductive health, family planning, social development, urbanisation etc.

Boycott call

TIRUPATI: The Chittoor District unit of the Andhra Pradesh United Teachers' Federation has said that in response to a call given by the State body, teachers will boycott evaluation work of the Class VII answersheets scheduled to begin on April 27.

The district leaders, N.Somachandra Reddy and Y. Srinivasulu Reddy, in a statement said that the decision was sequel to non-release of the G.O hiking remuneration for SSC paper evaluation. — Staff Reporter

Elected

CUDDAPAH: A former KC Canal Adinimmayapalle Distributary Committee chairman, D. Chandramouleeswara Reddy, was unanimously re-elected Pathacuddapah water users' committee president in elections held on Monday.

The others unanimously elected were Ayyavari Reddy (vice-president) and 12 terrotorial committee members.

A. Bayyapu Reddy was elected Lingadinnepalle WUA president in Brahmamgari Matham mandal unopposed. M. Rami Reddy was elected vice-president.

Other WUA presidents elected are I.C. Subba Reddy (Chennamukkapalle), Venkataswamy (Chakrayapet), P. Yerrachennappa (Uppagunta), Vasudeva Reddy (Madhavapanthula Cheruvu), K. Gangi Reddy (Konasamudram), B. Narasa Reddy (Rajupalem) and A. Tirumal Reddy (Kongalaveedu). — Staff Reporter

Dharna staged

CUDDAPAH: Muslim organisations and MRPS members staged dharna before the Collectorate on Monday, alleging a political conspiracy by Congress leaders behind the ACB arresting the Cuddapah RDO, Khaja Mohiuddin, on charges of corruption.

Demanding a CBI enquiry to expose the conspiracy, they demanded stern punishment of the guilty. — Staff Reporter

Minor molested

NELLORE: An 80-year old man allegedly molested a 10-year old girl in a secluded place on the outskirts of Nellore town.

The locals handed over the man to the police who registered a case. — Staff Reporter

Tension over `intruders' at Gudur rly. station

NELLORE: Hundreds of passengers experienced anxious moments at Gudur railway station on Sunday night following the alleged forcible entry of some unemployed youths in various trains. The intruders, said to be from Maharashtra, Bihar and Rajasthan, were returning from Chennai after writing the Railway Recruitment Board examination. The tense situation was defused following intervention of local and the railway police, who arrested 23 persons. - Staff Reporter

Paritala case: suspects' remand extended

ANANTAPUR: The judicial custody of 15 suspects in the Paritala Ravindra murder case was extended till May 9 by the Additional Judicial First Class Magistrate, A. Jayaraj, here on Monday.

Meanwhile, the CBI is giving final touches to its chargesheet. It is learnt that the investigating agency will file the chargesheet in a couple of days. - Staff Reporter

`Insane' woman

kills daughter

Siddipet: Mangali Pochamma (30) a resident of Pamulaparthi of Vargal mandal smashed the heads of her two daughters with a grinding stone on Monday, killing the eldest girl Ramadevi (9) and grievously injuring Vijaya (4). Later she tried to hang herself. But, as neighbours tried to break open the door, she walked out. - Staff Reporter

Arms seized from Maoist dump

ANANTAPUR: Police unearthed a huge haul of arms and explosives from a Maoist dump in Chitravati forest area on Sunday. Two DBBLs, one .8mm revolver, one pistol, one .38mm revolver, one .9mm service pistol, two air guns, nine kit bags, gelatin sticks, detonators and revolutionary literature were seized. - Staff Reporter

Five Maoists surrender

VIZIANAGRAM: Five Maoists, including a 17-year-old girl, of Kondabaridi dalam surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, Swati Lakra. On the information given by the girl, Biddika Goyimi, police unearthed a dump containing one landmine, one SBML gun and electrical wire at Chaparaiguida in Kurupam mandal. All the surrendered Maoists were trained in handling arms and explosives, the SP said. - Correspondent

Maoist bandh partial

Rajahmundry: The bandh call given by Maoists on Monday in agency areas of north Andhra districts and Godavari districts, in protest of an encounter that took place in Gunakarai of Visakhapatnam, passed off peacefully. No untoward incident was reported. Shops were open except in few villages in Ramapachodavaram and Donkarai. Police deployed additional forces near all RTC bus stations and police stations. - Staff Reporter
