THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The First Additional Sessions Judge, K. Sasidharan Nair, on Monday, sentenced a 27-year-old youth, Thomas alias Shikhamani, to death for raping and murdering a seven-year-old girl in a rubber estate at Puthuserymukku in Kallambalam police station limits on September 18, 1999. The victim, Sheeba, daughter of Gracy and Rajan, residents of Kunnuvila Puthenveedu, Kottamala near Thottekkad in Nedumangad Taluk, was a second standard student of Muslim LP School, Pullurmukku, when the incident took place. According to the prosecution, Sheeba was returning home after delivering food to her father, working in a nearby rubber estate, when she was whisked away and raped at an isolated place in the estate. Her body was recovered from a marsh nearby. The prosecution examined 25 witnesses and depended on circumstantial and scientific evidence.
One arrested
The police have arrested one person in connection with the hurling of crackers at a youth, Girilal, in Vattiyoorkavu police station limits five years ago. According to the police, the accused B. Harilal, 35, a resident of Vazhayila near Peroorkada, had fled to the Maldives immediately after the incident. The accused, who was booked under the Explosives Act, was produced before the court and remanded. The attack victim, Girilal, is a resident of Mamabazhakunnu.
Three inured
Three persons who were working on the construction site of a house at Kaithamukku were injured when the scaffolding on which they were standing collapsed. The incident occurred on Monday evening. The injured, who have been admitted to the Medical College Hospital, are Vijayan (45) and Suresh (35), both of Kanjiramkulam and Mohanan (40) of Perayam.
