It is post-mortem for death due to paralysis

Even police plea for release of body without post-mortem falls on deaf ears

HYDERABAD: The pleas of the relatives of the late Kumara Chary to the Osmania General Hospital to release his body without `tearing it apart' for a post-mortem got muffled by red tape on Monday.

The body of Chary, which was lying the hospital morgue since his death on Friday night, was released on Monday after post-mortem with the officials insisting that since a medico-legal case was registered, an autopsy was compulsory.

Even the letter written by the Jeedimetla police, whom Chary's wife Shobharani had approached, that the body could be released without post-mortem since there was no doubt over the nature of his death, turned to be futile with hospital authorities asserting they would "not deviate from norms".

Top-level confusion

The superintendent, Ashok Kumar or the RMO, V.A. Patel, were not sure whether the body was released. "There are several bodies in the morgue. I'm not sure about this case. All I can say is that since it is a medico-legal case, it will, or would have been released only after post-mortem," Dr. Kumar said.

Dr. Patel, meanwhile sought to pass on the buck to the head of the Forensic department, N. Narayana Reddy, who is out of station. "Dr. Narayana Reddy is the person concerned. But he is out of station for a seminar," is what the RMO said.

Other hospital officials strove to harp on the medico legal case angle. "He was brought in an unconscious state, and there were no relatives with him.

They came later and claimed the body. Since the cause of his unconsciousness was not known, we registered an MLC as per rules," one official said. Finally, it was the police who confirmed that the body had been released. After post-mortem.
