THINGS JUST GOT WORSE? Double parking is common on Bangalore's Brigade Road where parallel parking has been introduced. Photo: K. Murali Kumar
BANGALORE: Traders have opposed the parallel parking system introduced on Brigade Road here. The city police introduced the system on an experimental basis on Brigade Road from Saturday. The system apparently eased traffic congestion but brought down the number of cars parked to about 40 from 85. Earlier, the system was introduced on M.G. Road. Police officials said easing traffic congestion should be given more priority than parking on busy roads. Parallel parking has helped in decongesting Brigade Road, the officials said. But the Brigade Shoppers and Establishments' Association wanted the city police to withdraw parallel parking as it will reduce space for parking. The association has been running the pay and park system on Brigade Road using parking meters. It has entered into an agreement with the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike to run the system for five years and is sharing the revenue collected with the BMP on a 50:50 basis. The association has spent over Rs. 40 lakhs on the parking meters. Recovering that money will be difficult, it said.
