India-Pakistan ties

Pervez Musharraf appears sincere in his desire to promote friendly ties with India. But in a controlled democracy like Pakistan, there is no guarantee that the General's successors will continue his policy of friendship with India. While the military establishment in Pakistan is unpredictable, the U.S.' arms business is a permanent threat to global peace.

What is the reason for Gen. Musharraf's newfound love for India? He is willing to let Kashmir wait and even claiming in international conferences that there is an improvement in India-Pakistan relations. Praising India, meeting a former Prime Minister, dining with Bollywood stars are all incredible.

One reason is the effect of the people-to-people contact, the taste of which the General's family members also had on the eve of his visit. It only goes to reinforce the fact that as more and more Pakistanis, especially those born before Partition, travel to India, they will soften their attitude towards Indians. Roots do have a strong effect on one's life.
