Pioneering work
That Pather Panchali, Satyajit Ray's classic film, is set to receive special honours at the Cannes International Film Festival (April 23) is good news. The film made 50 years ago heralded the art film movement and brought Indian cinema into international focus. The merit of the film is that it exuded artistic realism at its best, though it portrayed poverty in West Bengal at its worst. The name of Satyajit Ray will ever be remembered.
