Staff Reporter

Protest against move to grant autonomous status to JIPMER

PONDICHERRY: The People's Action Committee, set up by various organisations and political parties, has called for a dawn-to-dusk bandh in the Pondicherry and Karaikal regions on April 28 to protest against the Centre's move to make the Jawaharlal Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) here an autonomous institution.

Briefing newsmen here on Tuesday, T. Murugan, chairman of the committee and member of the executive committee of the Tamil Nadu unit of the CPI(M), said the move would affect free medical services offered to the poor and the job security of workers. A delegation of the committee would call on the Prime Minister in New Delhi on May 9 or 10 to seek his intervention. The members would also stage a dharna in Jandhar Mandir.

Leaders of various parties said the Pondicherry Government did not adopt a firm stand against the move.
