Villagers oppose construction of sewage tank

Staff Reporter

ERODE: The villagers of Agraharam Periyapalayam near Uthukuli have opposed the proposed construction of sewage treatment plant in Velliampalayam, falling under its panchayat.

Panchayat president of Agraharam Periyapalyam, Vasanthy, and former Perundurai CPI MLA, N. Periyasamy, presented a petition to the Collector, D. Karthikeyan, stating that the proposed construction would affect several villages.

They said that as Velliampalayam in Perundurai taluk was situated near Tirupur, the New Tirupur Area Development Corporation and Tirupur Municipality had planned the plant on a 12-acre site.

Sewage and wastewater from Tirupur, stored in the tank would percolate water sources in nearby areas such as Nallakattipalayam, KTK Nagar and Pethampalayam. Further, as there were sand quarries in Vellampalayam, explosions there could weaken the tank, they claimed.

They told the Collector that if further steps were taken to construct the plant, they would resort to agitation.
