Chennai: The 19th National karate championship, conducted by the Tamil Nadu Sports Karate-do Association, got off to a colourful and exciting start at the SDAT multipurpose indoor stadium here on Tuesday with the host winning a gold medal in girls' kata.
An exciting part of the opening ceremony was the demonstration and combat by Deputy Mayor Karate Thiagarajan. The opening day undoubtedly belonged to C. Kalaivani of Tamil Nadu, a fourth class student of Grace Matriculation School, who bagged the 10-11 years girls' individual kata honours. Maharashtra collected two gold medals in the 10-11 and 12-13 boys' individual katas. The Tamil Nadu boys, R.A. Ramprasad and T. Surya Prakash from Tagore School (Tindivanam), took the silver medals.
The results: Individual kata: Girls: 10-11: 1. C. Kalaivani (TN), 2. Jouzina Boruza (Mah), 3. Tips Ngi Raliang (Meg) and Himani Sharma (MP).Boys: 10-11: 1. Akash S. Udugade (Mah), 2. T.K. Surya Prakash (TN), 3. Vinamraviz (Delhi) and Ayan Chaterjee (Bengal); 12-13: 1. Abhishek Pai (Mah), 2. R.A. Ramprasad (TN), 3. Lijo Mekkunnel (Kerala) and Ajay Yadav (MP).
