KOLKATA: Amid the chanting of slokas and the singing of devotional songs by monks of the Ramakrishna Mission and the emotional outpouring of hundreds of men and women, the mortal remains of Swami Ranganathananda, president of the Ramakrishna Mission, was cremated on Tuesday at the order's headquarters at Belur Math, near Kolkata. The body of the 96-year-old scholar-monk who died on Monday was kept in the cultural hall inside the Math, where hundreds of admirers paid their last respects. All through Monday night and Tuesday morning followers thronged the Math premises to bid farewell to their beloved guru. The West Bengal Governor, Gopal Krishna Gandhi, paid his respects to the Swami. At noon, the Swami's body was carried to the temple dedicated to Ramakrishna, Sarada Devi, Swami Vivekananda and Swami Brahmananda, the order's first president, to the chanting of "Hari Om Ramakrishna." Later, the body was brought to the Sarada ghat, on the bank of the Hooghly. After the rituals, the monks lit the funeral pyre at 12.40 p.m.
