TUTICORIN: Amidst tight police security, municipal and revenue officials conducted an eviction drive at Kovilpatti on Tuesday.

Encroached structures such as shops and houses situated along the road connecting West Police Station and New Road Junction were removed.

Lightning damages church roof

Nagercoil : The roof of St. Antony's Church in Inayamputhanthurai near Karungal was partly damaged when lightning struck the building on Monday night.

According to police sources, the wiring in the church was also charred when Karungal experienced thundershowers. — Staff Reporter

18 held for gambling

Tuticorin : The police arrested 18 persons for gambling on Monday, in raids conducted across the district.

Sources told media persons that Vijayapandi and six others from Thattaparai area, Murugan and seven others from Naalaatinputhur, and Saravan and two others from Alwarthirunageri were arrested. — Staff Reporter

Exhibition of Tamil books

CHENNAI: Small publishers and sellers of Tamil books have organised an exhibition in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry from April 28.

The 12-day show will be held by 77 publishers at 47 places including Tiruvannamalai, Ariyalur, Udumalpet, Ulundurpet, Chidambaram, Madurai, Salem, Dharmapuri, Bhavani, Mayiladuturai, Vellore and Poonamallee. About 1,700 titles would be on sale, A. Sachitanandam of Kanthalagam Publications told presspersons here on Tuesday. Besides 26 districts of Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and its enclave, Karaikal, would be covered. The show, which has been timed to coincide with summer holidays for educational institutions was aimed at taking Tamil books to people to their own towns.

In all, books worth Rs. 50 lakhs would be displayed. — Special Correspondent

Bombs hurled at councillor's house

TUTICORIN: Some unidentified persons hurled country bombs at the house of O. Murugesan, a DMK councillor of ward 32, in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The police said there was no damage to the house at Mela Shanmugapuram in the town. The inmates escaped unhurt.

CHENNAI: The results of the All-India Entrance Examination for admission to Bachelor Degree programmes in Engineering and Technology held on April 16, 2005, conducted by the S.R.M. Trophy for Sainik School

CHENNAI: Sainik School, Amaravathi Nagar, has bagged the coveted Defence Minister's Trophy for sending maximum number of cadets to the National Defence Academy for 2003-04. B.K. Handique, Minister of State for Defence, presented the trophy to Commander Alokesh Sen, principal of the school, at the inaugural ceremony of the conference of Principals of Sainik Schools held recently at Thiruvananthapuram.

It is one among the 20 schools, which had sent 20 cadets for the 114th course of the Academy beginning in July 2005, says a Press Information Bureau release. — Special Correspondent

missing DSP

SALEM: The Salem city police are on the lookout for Mani Ratnam, Mettur Deputy Superintendent of Police, who has been reportedly missing for the past four days.

The police sources said Mr. Mani Ratnam, who was recently promoted in recognition of his services in the Special Task Force that hunted down forest brigand Veerappan, came to Salem Integrated bus stand in his jeep on April 23. He was to visit his village in Namakkal district. The police said they came to know of his disappearance only when his family members enquired about his whereabouts with the Omalur police. — Special Correspondent

Two boys found dead near railway track

NAGAPATTINAM: Two boys, Marimuthu (17) and Pandian (15), of Sirkazhi town in the district were found dead near the railway track at the Arasur unmanned level-crossing on the Sirkazhi-Manalagaram Road on Monday.

Police sources said that the teenagers went in a two-wheeler for flower decoration work in connection with a Mariamman temple festival at Manalagaram on Sunday and were returning to Sirkazhi in the early hours of Monday.

But they were found dead near the railway track.

The railway police have registered a case and investigating. — Staff Reporter

Suspension of professor revoked

ERODE: The suspension of a Senior Grade Computer Science Professor working in Erode Arts College has been revoked, said the Association of University Teachers' representatives here today. They asked the management to settle all other demands of the teachers of the college. - Staff Reporter

ERODE: The Erode Karungalpalayam police arrested two persons, Senthilkumar and Ameer Abbaz, on Monday for possessing unlicensed CDs of latest movies such as Chandramugi, and Vasul Raja MBBS. - Staff Reporter

50 more sheep die

ERODE: Farmers of Chinna Molarapatty, Upparu and Kallipalayam villages in Dharapuram have been rendered worried, as about 50 of their sheep have died suddenly. A few days back, over 1,000 sheep and goats died due to Blue Tongue disease in Dharapuram and surrounding areas. Officials of Animal Husbandry Department provided medicines to the remaining sheep. The farmers have urged the officials to take preventive steps to save the remaining sheep.

CPI demand

ERODE: The State and the Centre should chalk out a master plan to make the Orathupalayam Reservoir functional, the Erode district CPI Executive, which met here on April 23 and 24, has said.
