PMK protests obscene portrayal of women

Special Correspondent

Seeks ban on advertisements

CHENNAI: Members of the women's wing of the Pattali Makkal Katchi staged a demonstration in Chennai on Tuesday to protest obscene portrayal of women in advertisements.

Led by the party president, G.K. Mani, they raised slogans condemning attempts at defaming women through advertisements.

Calling for stringent action against female foeticide and infanticide, the PMK members also urged the State Government to ban the display of hoardings or any advertisement material that showed women in poor light.

Mr. Mani said that several serials on television channels portrayed that one section of women was subjecting another section to intense hardship and harassment. A censor board should be constituted to scrutinise such serials before being telecast.
