MADURAI: Caste Hindus and Dalits in the Keeripatti panchayat in this district, where a section of Dalits alleged that it was "ostracised", have agreed to co-exist peacefully. At a peace meeting conducted by Usilampatti Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) Dinesh Ponraj Oliver on Tuesday, all shopkeepers gave an undertaking that they would not discriminate against anyone and would sell grocery to all people. The villagers agreed to work together on agricultural fields. The meeting asked the villagers to avoid "outsiders" and "organisations" that tried to create differences among them. Earlier, the RDO conducted separate meetings with representatives of caste Hindus and Dalits. He told The Hindu , "The caste Hindus stoutly denied having given any diktat to the shopkeepers to boycott a section of Dalits [relatives of P. Poongodi, who unsuccessfully contested in the recent byelection in the reserved panchayat]." The Usilampatti Deputy Superintendent of Police, P. Govindaraju, participated in the meeting.
