Disaster management school planned

CHENNAI: In the wake of the deadly tsunami which struck the State in December last, and with disaster management becoming the buzz word now, plans are afoot to start a "disaster management school" in the Directorate of Fire Service's State Training Centre here as part of the efforts to upgrade the facility into a training academy. Proposals for setting up the school are to be prepared and sent to the Government for approval.

At present, the centre is located at suburban Tambaram. When it is being upgraded, it will need better facilities, fire service sources told The Hindu .

It will train the Directorate's personnel and also those from other departments to enable them to meet the challenges being posed by any major disaster. It is a complex exercise and involves teamwork. Besides the departments concerned, there is a need to create awareness in society on preparedness and management. Already fire service personnel undergo the rigour during their training period. When the school is established, a more specialised training can be imparted to the recruits as also those involved in disaster management.
