THANJAVUR: The Collector M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, called upon the officials of all departments to take steps to put an end to child labour menace in the district. Speaking at a meeting, attended by officials of various departments, organised to review the implementation of child labour eradication in the district, he said that the Labour Department should ensure that the laws related to eradication of child labour were implemented in letter and spirit by all the departments. THANJAVUR: The Industry Department should implement the prevention of child labour in Industries Act 1948 and Child Labour Eradication Act 1986. The Rural Development Department should observe June 12 as Anti-child Labour Day and should ensure that all the panchayats and other local bodies in the district took necessary action to prevent child labour. The Social Welfare Department should inspect the functioning of anganwadis and primary schools to ensure that no girl child was kept at home to do other works. The Education department should train teachers on schemes pertaining to child labour eradication and the Public Works Department and the Highways Department should ensure that the contractors did not employ children for their works, the Collector said.
A. Sirajudeen, Labour Inspector, Poonguzhali, Inspector of Industries, P.Ramaraj, Chief Educational Officer, Thanjavur district, Ingersal, PA to Collector, Rural Development, traders and industrialists took part in the meeting.
