THANJAVUR: Women self-help groups (SHGs) have brought about a renaissance in the society, said the Collector, M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, here today. Laying the foundation stone for the Guild of Service Vocational Training Centre, he said that adequate training was necessary to make women emerge as successful entrepreneurs. The vocational training centre to come up in the Guild of Service premises might provide the necessary training to the members of the SHGs. The Collector said that entrepreneurship training has been given to 17,201 women in the district in the last four years. There are 9,174 women SHGs in the district with a membership of 1,56,193. Credit linkage has been given to these groups to the tune of Rs.32 crores and the groups have a savings of Rs.28.03 crores. Banks were interested in lending to the SHGs, as the recovery level was good. The banks also mobilised deposits from them, he said. He appreciated the Innerwheel club of Thanjavur for taking up a useful project particularly for the benefit of womenfolk. The vocational centre will come up at a cost of Rs.15 lakhs as a project of Innerwheel Club of Thanjavur. G.K.Vasan, MP and president of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, has allotted Rs.15 lakhs from his Local Area Development Fund. ' G. Swaminathan, former MP, A.M. Swaminathan, retired IAS officer, Usharani Sudhakaran, president of the Innerwheel Club of Thanjavur, Mrs. Bharathi Rajkumar Nagpal, secretary of the club, G. Rangaswamy Moopanar, president of Sri Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha, Sampath Moopanar and T. Suresh Kumar, Congress leaders participated in the function.
