KHA all set to celebrate golden jubilee

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Hockey Association (KHA) has drawn up a series of programmes in connection with its golden jubilee celebrations.

Giving details of the various projects to be implemented, the KHA President, Kaikara Nizamuddin, said the celebrations would be kicked off in Kollam with a training camp for 40 junior players selected from various districts. The camp, to be held in Kollam on April 28 and 29, will be supervised by the former Indian coach, V. Bhaskaran.

Besides giving tips to the participants of the camp, the former Indian captain will also be conducting a clinic for the hockey coaches in the State.

Test series

The highlight of the celebrations would be a two-match Test series between Indian Airlines and the Kerala XI, also to be held in Kollam on May 8 and 9. The venue for this series would be the Lal Bahadur Stadium.

All the current internationals like Dhanraj Pillay, Indian skipper Dilip Tirkey and Arjun Halappa would be part of the Indian Airlines team, he said.

He also said that the all-Kerala TKM Champions Trophy tournament would be held at the Fatima Matha National College ground, Kollam, from April 27 to 29. The champion club teams of all the 14 districts are to participate in the three-day event. The KHA is also trying to have a synthetic turf laid in Kerala during the celebration period. Kollam, being the centre of hockey in Kerala, is the preferred choice to put up a synthetic turf ground.

Efforts are being made to identify an open ground at Kollam for this purpose. Both SAI and the Government have responded positively towards the project and have promised financial support once the land is made available, Mr. Nizamuddin added.
