THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Leader of the Opposition, V. S. Achuthanandan, has said that his comments about the SSLC pass percentage in Malappuram district are being distorted and misinterpreted to unleash narrow regional chauvinistic emotions. In a statement here on Tuesday, Mr. Achuthanandan said this was being done to protect those involved in the SSLC question paper leak, the `guide mafia' and multinational computer monopolies. The media had already reported the sudden rise of Malappuram to the second position in the matter of higher ranks in medicine entrance examination after having lagged behind all along and his warnings about the possibility of irregularities in SSLC and professional education had been proved right. The attempt to make it appear that he had spoken against the people of Malappuram district was being made to divert public attention from all this, the Opposition Leader said.
Mr. Achuthanandan alleged rampant corruption in the sphere of education under the leadership of the Muslim League Ministers. The ones who had benefited from their corruption were not the ordinary masses of Malappuram. The people of Malappuram had made great progress in education, but this was not on account of the Muslim League, but because of the work put in by the progressive movements, including the CPI(M).
In a separate statement, the CPI(M) State secretary, Pinarayi Vijayan, said the allegation that the CPI(M) was defaming the educational achievements of Malappuram and minorities was ill-motivated and baseless.
